Year 5 and 6 girls from Westfield Junior School and Holywell CofE Primary School in St Ives have qualified for the county finals after competing in the thrilling Pokémon Cup.

The Hunts School Sports Partnership's (HSSP_ Autumn term inter-school Girls Football events returned to One Leisure St Ives Outdoor Centre on October 17 in "an action-packed day of excitement, camaraderie, and competition."

Around 220 school girls took part, and after the morning festival, the Pokémon Cup commenced, with eleven schools competing in knockout rounds, producing intense matches and thrilling moments.

Brampton Village Primary School, Bury CofE Primary School, Bushmead Primary School, Holme CofE Primary Academy, Holywell CofE Primary School, Houghton Primary School, Little Paxton Primary School, Somersham Primary School, Stilton CofE Primary Academy, Warboys Primary Academy and Westfield Junior School all took part.

Doug Finlayson, partnership manager at the HSSP, said: "As the matches unfolded, it was clear that these girls were not just skilled footballers but also great ambassadors of the sport.

"The spirit of fair play was evident throughout the afternoon as they displayed impressive football skills and, equally important, mutual respect for their competitors.

Westfield Junior School and Holywell CofE Primary School met in a closely contested final, in which Westfield triumphed with a 2-1 victory to be crowned the Pokémon Cup champions for Huntingdonshire.

Both schools will now go through to the county finals in January as district representatives.

Doug added: "The tournaments were a testament to the growth of girls football within primary schools across Huntingdonshire."
