INTERNET users will be able to monitor the progress of the new �3million recycling centre for St Neots by logging onto the site's very own web camera.

Residents can click onto "trash-cam" at http://cctv0992.herongrange.com/view/index.shtml to check on the progress of work on the state-of-the-art facility, and when the site is fully open, they can see how busy it is before they visit.

Internet users can also pan, tilt and zoom in on what is going on around the site.

This is the first time Cambridgeshire County Council has tried this and hope it will prove a success and may be used elsewhere on similar projects.

The new recycling centre on Cromwell Road Industrial Estate is due to open in October and will replace the old, open-air site, which is located in the middle of St Neots.

The new centre will be split level, so people no longer have to struggle up steps with heavy rubbish, and will be indoors to make it more comfortable to recycle. Residents will be able to recycle the widest possible range of items including electrical appliances, timber, garden waste, batteries and cardboard.

The new facilities will also help people who previously used the now closed Buckden site.

Cambridgeshire County Councillor Tony Orgee, Cabinet Member for Economy and the Environment, said: "Cambridgeshire is one of the leading counties in the country when it comes to recycling and composting. Providing the best facilities and great customer service is all part of helping our residents recycle more of their rubbish. This new camera will allow people to use the internet to keep an eye on the work going on at this new state of the art facility and when it is finished check out how busy it is before they leave to use it. If it is successful here then we will look to use it elsewhere.
