Husband and wife team, Karen and Trevor Fowler, are celebrating a decade of owning the Huntingdon pub The Samuel Pepys.
Now a hotspot on the town’s High Street, the pub and its owners have seen a lot of change in the past 10 years.
Mr Fowler said: “It is a sense of achievement owning the pub for so long. Although it has also been tiring as in this industry you are always on the go but we love it so we will definitely be here for a few more years.”
When the pair first took over the pub it was dated and in need of refurbishment and modernisation.
“We looked at about six or seven places when me and Sharon were looking to go into business together and we had drawn up a few business plans and this one made the most sense,” said Mr Fowler.
Despite the business opportunity it was also the draw of rekindling past memories that added to Mr Fowler’s decision.
“I grew up here as I child as this was my dad’s pub so I have seen it change a lot. When we first came in we had a certain vision of what we wanted to achieve and I think we have managed to achieve that.”
To make the pub what it is today the couple, who also own The King William IV in Fenstanton, have spent thousands refurbishing the inside as well as introducing more food and adding entertainment to draw customers.
Mr Fowler said: “If we had stood still in this industry and don’t constantly evolve then we would be going backwards but we are still looking at more changes for later on this year including reintroducing breakfasts to the menu.”
To mark the decade in business the couple are hosting a celebration event on Sunday from 12pm where local musicians will be performing and a barbecue will be put on.
