Cambridgeshire Police tend to see an increase in burglaries around Christmas, with a seven per cent rise in offences this year.
Between June and August this year, 307 burglaries were reported compared to 329 from September to November.
Figures from the force show social media polls found 43 per cent of respondents leave presents under their tree ahead of Christmas Eve.
And this can be a temptation for opportunistic burglars.
Police say there have been larger increases in certain parts of the county including Huntingdonshire, South Cambridgeshire and the Cambridge City area.
Detective Sergeant Justin Parr said: “The Acquisitive Crime Teams across the county will continue to catch offenders, and we’re pleased to have successfully prosecuted 29 burglars since the beginning of the year.
“Burglars won’t stop this Christmas, but please help us to help you, and protect your home where you can."
Det Sgt Parr added: “We hope you do not need us over the festive period but if you do, we will be here.”
Keeping Christmas presents out of sight and breaking down any boxes if discarding packaging from new gifts are some of the tips police are advising residents.
Some tips include: closing blinds or curtains at night to prevent people from looking in; leaving radios or lights on to make your home appear occupied, or investing in security cameras or doorbells.
Residents are also encouraged to make sure shopping bags are not visible in your car.
And if expecting deliveries, police are asking residents to put them somewhere safe.
“Many people go away during the festivities, and I would advise against advertising it on social media," said Det Sgt Parr.
"Most people have many friends on social media networks and they in turn have friends, so people you may not know well could become aware of your plans."
Other advice includes not leaving doors and windows open or unlocked even when you’re in the house.
