A man has been handed a community order after he "violently" resisted arrest, which left a police officer needing surgery for a broken ankle.

Christopher Everdell, 41, was arrested in Market Hill, St Ives, in June last year following reports of violence towards his partner.

As officers from Cambridgeshire Police tried to handcuff him, he became violent and abusive, dragging the officers to the ground.

The officer described an "immense pain" and feeling his ankle "snap" under the pressure. He later required surgery and required a significant stint off work.

When questioned, Everdell, of Derwent Road, St Ives, showed no remorse but later pleaded guilty to GBH without intent.

He was handed a community order at Peterborough Crown Court earlier this month (July 6). He was also ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work.

Detective Sergeant Emma Garwood, who investigated, said: "Police officers put their lives on the line every single day in order to protect others.

"They should not be subjected to such levels of violence for simply trying to do their job.

"This was a horrific incident for the officer involved and a gross overreaction to the situation by Everdell."
