An initiative which provides nursing care for cancer patients in their homes has reached a significant milestone – its 10-year anniversary.

The Huntingdon Community Cancer Nurses are a home-based service that operates out of Hinchingbrooke Hospital.

Nurses support patients in their own homes so they can continue with their day-to-day lives as much as possible throughout their treatment.

Andrea Cliff, community cancer nurse specialist and head nurse, said: "Ten years ago the Huntingdon Community Cancer Nurses were established as part of an East Anglian trial to improve holistic care for cancer patients undergoing treatment.

“The mixture of clinical and psychological support improved patients’ experiences during treatment and avoided unnecessary hospital admissions.”

She added: “We are a friendly team who want to support you and your family through what can be a very confusing, stressful and worrying time."

The Huntingdon Community Cancer Nurses marked their milestone with a small party.

One of the nurses, Mel Scholes, is also taking part in a dare devil flight to raise money for the Huntingdon Community Cancer Network (HCCN) which supports the nurses.

She said: “As a nursing team we thought it would be good to celebrate our 10th anniversary with an exciting fundraiser - what better than ‘a flight of exhilaration’ with Mark Jefferies, who has kindly donated his time.”

More than £1,200 has been raised ahead of her loop-the-loop experience which will take place on Friday (September 23).

Her original target was £1,000 and this would support six patients with counselling throughout their cancer journey.

Mel added: “I'm not sure if I’m excited or scared if I’m honest (probably a bit of both) - but there’s no backing out now!

“Thanks to everyone who is supporting us."
