A video has captured the moment the St Ives car trap claimed one of its most recent victims.

The red Volvo SUV was filmed crawling along the guided busway route before falling into the trap.

The driver would’ve passed signs prohibiting entry to vehicles other than the guided bus and ‘GUIDED BUS ONLY’ markings twice before hitting it.

Rocco Smith, 17, from Warboys, saw it happen when he was in St Ives on Wednesday night (September 28).

Residents say the red Volvo was one of three vehicles to be caught in the trap on the same day, bringing this week’s total to five so far.

Rocco said: “I saw the driver heading towards the car trap but from where we were, I couldn't get out the car to get to them in time.

“But this is happening so often now, someone needs to record it. There are clear road signs there, but it keeps happening.

“Now it has been caught on camera perhaps something will be done about it.”

The car trap is located in Harrison Way and Station Road.

This week there have been renewed calls to revisit the issue as residents feel more motorists than ever are falling into it

Cambridgeshire County Council says it is aware of 60 incidents since it opened 12 years ago – but residents say it happens at least once a week.

“We would like to remind drivers to be aware of this and look out for the signage if they are driving around this location,” a council spokesperson previously said.

Meanwhile, one former St Ives resident is keen to speak to motorists who have fallen into the trap to find out why it happened.

Robin King said: “This doesn’t seem to happen anywhere else along the busway and someone needs to get to the bottom of why it is happening.

“Some data collection work needs to be done to then see if there is a better option for this section of the route.”

If you have fallen into the trap and are willing to speak to Robin email reporter Louise Hepburn on louise.hepburn@newsquest.co.uk.
