A cyclist who hit a pedestrian after running a red light in Cambridge has been sentenced.

Lucasz Pietrzyk, 40, of The Rowans, Milton, was cycling along Elizabeth Way at about 3.45pm on May 4, 2022 when he failed to stop at a pedestrian crossing and hit a member of the public.

The pedestrian, a 56-year-old man, was knocked to the ground and hit his head. He was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, in Cambridge, with bleeding on the brain and a fractured skull and was treated there for seven months.

At Cambridge Crown Court on November 30, Pietrzyk, was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for 18 months, after pleading guilty to causing bodily harm by wanton/furious driving.

PC Tom Robinson, from the Road Policing Unit, who investigated, said: “The cyclist accepted being at fault in the first instance and demonstrated remorse from the outset but his lapse in concentration has left a man with life changing injuries.

"The victim now suffers with severe memory loss and has complex needs as a result of the incident.

“Cyclists, like any other road users, are obliged to take reasonable care to avoid causing damage to others using or present on the road.”
