Work has begun on a huge project aimed at improving and enhancing one of Huntingdonshire's market towns.
The St Neots Town Centre Improvement Project will see the town's historic Market Square undergo huge change.
Parking on the Square, which has been dramatically reduced in recent years, will be further reduced and relocated, and seating will be introduced. The plan is to create an "attractive and versatile public realm space," says Huntingdonshire District Council.
The improvements are part of an ambitious Market Towns Programme to support Huntingdonshire's town centres. The investment in St Neots High Street totals around £15 million.
The programme of works has been jointly funded by the Cambridge & Peterborough Combined Authority, Huntingdonshire District Council, the Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities, National Highways and Cambridgeshire County Council.
The primary focus of the project will be in Market Square and the High Street and will continue until January 2025.
To minimise disruption, traffic management measures will be implemented during the construction period, and road closures will be limited to overnight and only carried out for essential carriageway resurfacing.
HDC has also said it will be posting a weekly bulletin on its website to keep people informed about progress.
This will outline the upcoming week's work and detail any traffic management measures in place. It aims to assist residents and visitors to St Neots so they can plan their journeys around the town.
Cllr Sam Wakeford, executive councillor for jobs, economy and housing at Huntingdonshire District Council, said: “We are excited that the construction phase of the town centre improvements project is now commencing, which is a significant milestone for St Neots.
"The project promises a more attractive, versatile and vibrant public space in the historic centre of the town."
