A new housing development of 132 new homes is due to be built on the edge of Somersham.

Huntingdonshire District Council has given the green light to plans to build the new homes on fields north of Chatteris Road.

The district council said the new housing estate would offer a ‘good quality environment’ for the people who end up living there.

The proposals for the new homes were put forward by Allison Homes after outline plans for the development were approved by the district council last year.

The land had been identified by the district council in its local plan as being suitable for a development of around 120 homes.

Over half of the new homes are planned to be sold as private market housing, with 53 made available as affordable housing.

Of the market homes, 10 are proposed to have two-bedrooms, 36 to have three-bedrooms, and 33 with four-bedrooms.

The affordable housing is due to include 37 social rented properties (with a mix of houses, bungalows and flats) and 15 shared ownership houses.

Planning officers at the district council said the affordable homes were proposed to be distributed across the site and said there was “no discernible difference between private and affordable dwellings”.

In a report published by the authority officers said the new development would offer a “good quality residential environment”.

They said: “The proposal is considered to respond to the opportunities and constraints of the site and relevant national and local planning policies and is acceptable in terms of highway safety, drainage, noise and ecology in accordance with the key design principles established at outline stage, subject to conditions.

“There are no other material planning considerations which lead to the conclusion that the proposal is inacceptable.”
