Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced yesterday (May 22) that a General Election will be held on July 4.

To launch The Hunts Post's coverage of the General Election, we'll be speaking to candidates in the constituencies of Huntingdon, North West Cambridgeshire, and the new constituency, St Neots and Mid Cambridgeshire.

Standing as a candidate for the Conservatives in North West Cambridgeshire is Shailesh Vara MP.

Mr Vara has served as an MP for North West Cambridgeshire since 2005, and hopes to be re-elected in the 2024 General Election.

He said: "I have a track record of serving the people of North West Cambridgeshire for over 19 years.

"As a constituency MP, I have helped to deliver on many local issues for individuals, organisations, as well as businesses.

"In fact, only today at Prime Minister's Questions (May 22) I raised the problem of potholes and road surfaces in my constituency."

Mr Vara added: "It is an enormous privilege and honour to be elected as a Member of Parliament and I take no vote for granted.

"I will be campaigning hard to gain the confidence of the constituents of North West Cambridgeshire so I can once again serve them in Parliament."

The MP's political background extends to the Cabinet, where he served as the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland under Boris Johnson's tenure as Prime Minister.

Mr Vara said: "Nationally, I have served as a Minister in a number of Departments - Justice, Work and Pensions, twice in Northern Ireland, the second time as Secretary of State and also in the Whips Office."
