Local primary school pupils were extremely pleased this week as they noticed the poppies they'd planted have began to bloom in time for D-Day.

Middlefield Primary Academy children, based in St Neots, noticed the blooming poppies and recognised their association with the 80th Anniversary of D-Day, taking place on June 6.

Miss Gemma Jarvis, Middlefield Primary Academy's Environmental Educational Lead, said: "After the children made the link between the poppies and the Second World War, we began discussions about the Dig For Victory campaign.

"It was set up with the aim to motivate the British people to grow their own vegetables. The children love the fact that we grow our own fruit and vegetables at school and they're even used in our school lunches."
