Members of the Huntingdon & District Branch, Royal Naval Association (RNA), held a Sea Sunday service at All Saints Church in Hartford.
Sea Sunday is an annual event that has been running since 1836 when the Mission for Seafarers (originally the Bristol Channel Mission) was formed by John Ashely.
Several Anglican ministries joined later to support those brave souls who could spend anywhere from a few months to more than a year away from their families to keep their country supplied with food and essential goods from around the world.
The mayor and mayoress of Huntingdon, Cllr Karl Brockett and Julie Brockett, were invited as guests.
The chairman of Huntingdonshire District Council, Cllr Steve McAdam, accompanied by his wife Audrey, who is also the deputy mayor of Huntingdon, also attended the event.
The service and prayers were led by the Rev Clifford Owen (also Huntingdon RNA’s chaplain) who was joined by All Saints curate, the Rev Fr. Sam Perez.
There were readings from members of Huntingdon RNA. Following a one- minute silence for seafarers and the singing of the National Anthem, everyone went to the nearby River Great Ouse where flowers were placed into the water in memory of those who have lost their lives at sea.
Huntingdon RNA members would like to thank all the clergy and parishioners of All Saints Church for their support, and to all those who came to the service to honour seafarers throughout the world.
