Cambridgeshire Police made dozens of arrests across the county during the Euros 2024 tournament.

Between June 14 to July 14, 73 were people were arrested on suspicion of drink or drug driving, four more than the last tournament in 2021.

Out of these, 53 people have already been charged.

Of the drivers arrested on suspicion of drink driving:

  • One man was seen to open a bottle of wine and drive away on the A14 in Bottisham. He blew 62 at roadside, nearly double the legal limit.

  • In Whittlesey, a woman was involved in a crash and identified as the driver. She blew 132 at the roadside

  • Meanwhile, a man was arrested after an evening crash in Ely on the day the Euros kicked off. He gave a reading of 170

  • Another man was seen drinking in a pub and then driving in Whittlesey. He later blew 56 microgrammes in custody

  • A driver was seen slumped at the wheel on the A605 at Peterborough. He blew 125 at the roadside

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Police said: "If you’re drinking, don’t drive and arrange an alternative way of getting home.

“Alcohol creates a feeling of overconfidence, makes judging distance and speed more difficult and slows your reactions so it takes longer to stop.

“We tackle drink driving all year round, and those who think it is acceptable to drive on our roads under the influence of alcohol should be warned; we will not tolerate it and will prosecute offenders.”
