Tributes have been paid to a family doctor who served the Eaton Socon community for more than 30 years.

Dr Peter Williams, of Yelling, near Papworth Everard, died aged 73 on July 9 following a nine-year battle with bowel cancer.

For many, he will be fondly remembered as their family GP at the Eaton Socon Health Centre which he joined in 1979.

A tribute released by his family said: “After growing up in the West Midlands with his parents and Gran, Peter was the first in his family to attend university, achieving a First Class Honours degree in Medicine from Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge before completing his studies at Birmingham University.

“In 1979 he moved to Yelling and joined Eaton Socon Health Centre as a GP, where he worked serving the local community for more than three decades, becoming well-known locally as a family doctor.”

Dr Williams’ family added his enthusiasm for science remained with him throughout his life and he “delighted in learning about the universe” and imparting his knowledge to others.

They said: “His grandchildren have fond memories of him conducting science experiments which frequently involved setting fire to things!”

He also made many friends over the years and enjoyed swimming and skiing.

Dr Williams particularly enjoyed working out at the gym and continued to attend fitness classes at Wyboston Lakes Health and Fitness Club despite his failing health.

Dr Williams is survived by his daughters Angie, Tracey, Jess and Mel. He also had four grandchildren: Ella, Beth, Ember and Ethan. His partner is Yvonne.

In lieu of flowers, a collection is being arranged in Dr Williams’ memory for Macmillan Cancer Support and Sue Ryder.

His family have given special thanks to the Macmillan team at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge and to Sue Ryder St John's Hospice, in Moggerhanger, where he spent his final days.
