A huge weekend of squash unfolded at Hunts County Squash Club to open the 2024-25 season for the junior squash players of Cambridgeshire, writes Colin Griggs.
Two full days of competition brought players from the age of eight to 18, from clubs across the county, to contest for the top titles in local squash.
For the second year, the championships were generously supported by title sponsors InstantHome, enabling The Sports Academy to create an event on par with senior county championships for the aspiring junior players.
The youngsters didn’t disappoint, with two days of high quality squash and great sporting spirit both on and off the court.
Saturday’s play involved the Mixed Under 9, Girls and Mixed Under 13, and Mixed Under 17 categories. Results after a hard day of squash:
Mixed U9; Runner-Up – Toby Setchell (Hunts County SC). Champion – Charles Morris (Swavesey SC).

Mixed U13: Runner-Up – Joe McKinney (King’s College School). Champion – Samuel Goodger (Ely SC).

Sunday’s play was equally intense, with battles for another five titles in the Girls and Mixed Under 11, Girls and Mixed Under 15, and Mixed Under 19 categories.

A superb weekend of squash will lead into lots of activity for the juniors. Initiatives throughout the season including the Junior Development Series, new Cambs’ Junior League and the England Squash Intercounty Championships are all great opportunities for the players.
Squash is a brilliant sport. Easy to get started, hard to master, and really accessible with no problems on numbers of players or the weather! For more information on where or how to play, go to: www.cambs-squash.uk www.englandsquash.com
