A 33-year-old man tried to drive up the wrong side of the A1, near St Neots, in an attempt to dodge the police.

Amer Jahangeer was spotted by Cambridgeshire Police officers driving a blue Audi A4 estate at around 3:10am on January 12. Once he realised that the police had seen him, he sped off.

The officers tried to stop the driver on Great North Road in St Neots but he carried on through some temporary traffic lights on red.

He drove south on Great North Road hitting 68 mph and he ignored roundabouts and keep left signs.

The Audi was stung by police officers, but Jahangeer continued driving onto the southbound entry slip-road for the A1 at Wyboston.

He tried to drive northbound on the southbound carriageway, but the officers made contact with the Audi once again to stop it.

Jahangeer was arrested and found to only have a provisional driving licence as well as no insurance to drive the Audi.

On Friday (September 27), Jahangeer, of Empire Avenue, Tottenham, London, was jailed for 12 months, having pleaded guilty to dangerous driving at an earlier hearing, but received no separate penalty for driving with no licence and no insurance.

He was also disqualified from driving for four years and six months and must take an extended re-test.

Sergeant Mark Atkins, from the road policing unit, said: “Jahangeer’s driving was ridiculous, when all he needed to do was pull over when requested to do so. He could have avoided a custodial sentence and not endangered other motorists.

"Fortunately, the officers acted swiftly to bring the pursuit to a safe conclusion."
