Damien Whales, the founder of The Malcolm Whales Foundation, is building a lakeside retreat for those affected by cancer where they can stay at for free.

Damien created the foundation in memory of his father, Malcolm, who he lost in 2008 to bowel cancer.

Since then, Damien has raised funds after he tackled Jurassic walks along the Dorset coast and organised charity events. He now wants to take on the building a Lakeside Retreat near Pidley.

The retreat will be available for families impacted by cancer, as well as staff who are supporting people going through a cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Talking about the inspiration behind the retreat, Damien said: "Losing my dad and creating this charity in his name is my proudest achievement.

"Over the past 16 years we have introduced thousands of people to the power of charity and fundraising events. Creating something of this magnitude enables our supporters to see the impact of their contribution and will show people who are experiencing difficult times that human kindness when mobilised can produce kindness when it is maybe needed most."

Damien added: "The retreat will provide a space for families to spend valuable time together.

"The location is stunning and the lodge itself will provide an amazing space for any family.

"The retreat won't be just for the families impacted by cancer, it will be available to those amazing staff that support and treat people going through cancer diagnosis and treatment."

Damien added that now the build has started, the local community have not stopped supporting his team.

"We have such a wide range of companies and local tradesmen who have donated materials and their time to help get the project over the line.

"Their kindness is what makes the time and commitment so worthwhile."

Damien is hoping to welcome the first families into the lodge before Christmas.
