A section of flood-prone road running between Little Paxton and St Neots that was left severely damaged by flooding could reopen within weeks.

Little Paxton Bridge, on the B1041 Mill Lane, was submerged for more than a week after heavy rainfall caused the River Great Ouse to burst its banks

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire County Council said that while it can't "commit to an exact date", it expects the bridge to safely reopen "within weeks rather than months".

A number of sections of weakened tarmac were washed away from the road's surface at the end of September after significant flooding.

Heavy rainfall often causes the Cambridgeshire river to flood, and the knock on effect in Little Paxton has left the lives of residents disrupted when the bridge and road close.

In February, a petition to improve the Little Paxton and Mill Lane bridges and road surfaces hit more than 1,000 signatures.

MP for St Neots and Mid Cambridgeshire Ian Sollom said he understood how "disruptive" the bridge's closure was for residents.

In a post on Facebook, he said he met with the leader of the county council and the chair of the Council Highways and Transport Committee to discuss why earlier repairs had "failed so soon."

He added: "I have pressed the Council to consider options to rebuild or improve the cobbles on the road for greater stability in the future.

"I have also spoken to the Environment Agency to discuss the management of the river and what long-term action they can take to mitigate the future risk of more extreme weather events.

"Thank you for your patience, I understand the stress you must be feeling. My office and I are here to support you, so please reach out at any time."
