Cllr Lara Davenport-Ray, executive councillor for climate, transformation and workforce talks about why your voice matters on climate action and the Local Plan.

As a Green councillor who cares about our planet, I know that many people in Huntingdonshire are worried about climate change.

An update to our local planning policies is a powerful way for us to take climate action. It’s very important that everyone gets involved. Younger people and older people, residents, and business owners - now is the time to share your opinions.

Our local planning policies are called Huntingdonshire’s Local Plan. This plan needs an update, so our council’s planning department has 36 questions to ask you. Your opinions will help guide the next version of the Local Plan.

One question is about renewable energy. Should we continue “business as usual” with increasing renewable energy to move part-way towards the government’s 2050 net zero target? Or should we be ambitious and try to achieve the 2050 deadline?

The rivers Great Ouse, Nene, and Kym flow through our towns and villages. So, we also need to think about how to tackle flooding.

Should we ask that new construction does not increase flood risk elsewhere? Or should we go further and expect builders to leave a site with even better flood prevention than they found it? Or maybe you have an alternative suggestion that you would like share?

These issues are important for both us and future generations. Let’s work together to make Huntingdonshire a leader in looking after our planet.
