A Public Space Protection Order (PSPO), which has been deemed as a "fantastic idea" by locals, is set to be enforced in a Huntingdonshire town.

In September, Huntingdonshire District Council were considering introducing a PSPO in Ramsey after a report published by the authority found that in the space of six months, Cambridgeshire Police received 32 reports of incidents in Great Whyte. 24 of them were related to street drinking.

The district council ran a public consultation to allow Ramsey locals to have their say on the potential PSPO for the Great Whyte and surrounding areas.

Of the 328 respondents to the consultation, 318 of them strongly agreed/agreed with the proposed conditions. 302 agreed with the conditions.

Under the order, people will not be allowed to have an open vessel of alcohol or another intoxicating substance, will not be allowed to use a narcotic substance, urinate or defecate in public, act in an intimidating way or harass people.

Several residents voiced their support for these conditions in the consultation, with one response reading: "This will be fantastic for Ramsey as the antisocial behaviour is ruining the town.

"Footfall has dropped due to people feeling intimidated by drunks and drug users."

Another read: "We know that young people have been affected by the anti-social behaviour. Some are scared to walk home from school through the town centre."

Some locals raised their concerns about whether more areas in Ramsey needed to be covered under the PSPO. Another worry was how the PSPO would be policed.

However, Huntingdonshire District Council have agreed to introduce the order to Ramsey.

Anyone in breach of the order could be fined or prosecuted in court.
