A Cambridgeshire MP has branded the cuts to winter fuel payments as a "very real distress" to his constituents.
Ian Sollom, the Liberal Democrat MP for St Neots and Mid Cambridgeshire, told The Hunts Post: "The cut to the Winter Fuel Payment has already caused very real distress to too many constituents in St Neots and Mid Cambridgeshire.
"While there may be a case for better targeting winter fuel support to pensioners in future, simply taking it away from 10 million pensioners is not the answer."
In the winter of 2023-24, 17,915 pensioners in Mr Sollom's constituency received the winter fuel payment benefit. Across the whole of Cambridgeshire, that number was 150,838.
Mr Sollom joined fellow Huntingdonshire MP, Ben Obese-Jecty (Conservatives, Huntingdon) in voting for a motion to block the cut to winter fuel payments.
Both MPs are urging their constituents to check whether they are eligible for pension credit.
Mr Sollom said: "I voted against the restriction of the winter fuel payment in September, and together with my Liberal Democrat colleagues in Parliament I will continue to press the government for action on tackling the cost-of-living crisis, ending fuel poverty and supporting our pensioners."
