The green light has been given for 340 new homes to be built in a Huntingdonshire village, despite one local's plea to "give us a break and give us time to catch up".

The hundreds of new homes will be built on Glatton Road, in Sawtry, and will range from one bedroom flats to five bedroom homes.

It has taken two years for the planning application to be approved, having first been submitted in May 2022. However, many Sawtry residents have spent that time in opposition to the homes being built.

One resident, in a letter of opposition to the plans, asked: "Is a new doctor's surgery going to be built? The doctor's can't cope with all these thousands of extra people as it is.

"This village has changed, and not for the better."

The housebuilder, Allison Homes East, has committed to making more than £5.6 million worth of contributions towards Sawtry infrastructure. A spokesperson for the developer said: "It will benefit the local surgery, sports facilities, early years and primary education facilities and improvements to bus routes."

The 340 new homes will be built alongside a brand new primary school, as well as a new public open space.

However, locals are still concerned about issues including drainage, sewers, crimes and potholes.

One resident said: "It's a total waste of time objecting to homes being built in Sawtry, whatever objections are raised are dismissed.

"Give us a break, give us time to catch up and sort out the problems before adding more."

Georgina McCrae, a Planning Director at Allison Homes East, said that the development will be, "high quality, sustainable homes" and said that it will "contribute to the communities" across Cambridgeshire.

Construction on the new housing development is due to commence in early 2025, with the first homes set to be finished at the end of that year.
