Fireworks in Hemingford set for 75th anniversary event

The event, set for Saturday, November 9, has grown from a small gathering around a bonfire in Hemingford Grey to a spectacle that entertains more than 4,000 guests.

A small group of dedicated volunteers has kept the event going over the years.

Lead organiser Andy Ward said: "My family’s involvement in this amazing community event can be traced back many years, so in 2017 when I heard the event was struggling with volunteers and was on the brink of collapse, it was a no-brainer for me!

"The rest as they say is history."

Cambridge Fireworks, winners of the 2018 Fireworks Championship, will provide the fireworks display.

Martin Sewell, who has been involved with the event for 25 years, said: "I first started helping with the event 25 years ago and have seen first-hand how much work and effort has been put into continuously improving and adapting the evening into what it is today.

"It’s a lot of hard work but all of it is made worth it by the smiles on people's faces, the pictures and comments on social media and with the money we have been able to support many charities and community groups with over the years.

"In today’s world, with work, life and financial pressures, we need community events like this to bring people together now more than ever."

As well as fireworks, the event will feature a funfair, street food vans, and entertainment from former Britain’s Got Talent contestant Jezo, who will perform magic tricks on stage.

Colonel Spanky’s Love Ensemble will play live music before and after the fireworks display.

Several community groups and charities will benefit from the event, including The Angels Foundation, Magpas, Cromwell Explorer Scouts, Hemingfords United Football Club, 1st Needingworth Scouts, and more.
