A Huntingdonshire school has received a coveted accolade for its teaching in core subjects.

Hinchingbrooke School was awarded the PTI Subject Mark for outstanding teaching in English, History and Maths and Science.

Formerly the Princes Teaching Institute, the PTI launched the Department Development Programme in 2007.

It recognises and rewards school departments that develop inspirational ideas and activities which enhance the teaching of art, D&T, English, geography, history, mathematics, modern foreign languages, music, PE and science, regardless of their pupils’ backgrounds or abilities.

Andy Hunter, principal at Hinchingbrooke School said: “We are delighted to have been awarded The PTI Mark for our in these four subjects in recognition of those department’s innovative work.

"Our English, history, maths and science departments received the PTI Mark in recognition of their work last year to increase student engagement and offer more learning activities outside the classroom.

"It is always good to receive recognition like this, but the main benefit is that it helps us provide the best education we can for our students.”

The PTI’s Department Development Programme is open to all state secondary schools in England.

To become members, school departments must demonstrate their commitment to increasing teachers’ subject knowledge, and to furthering their students’ understanding of and enthusiasm for the subject, regardless of their background or ability.

Close to 4,000 teachers engaged in PTI activities, with 1,302 school departments working to increase the challenge of their work in 2023.

To achieve The PTI Subject Mark, departments have to demonstrate that they have increased the challenge within their subject curriculum.

They must also show that they developed their staff’s specialist subject knowledge, improved subject-based links outside school and enthused their pupils through subject-based activities beyond the curriculum.
