A much-loved and iconic staple on a Huntingdonshire high street is officially on the market.
Brittains, a former family furniture store in St Neots, had been on the High Street for 120 years. However, the family made the tough decision in June 2023 to shut shop after being hit with rising costs and recession.
Since then, the building has laid vacant on the town's main street. However, in September 2024, a planning application was submitted to Huntingdonshire District Council seeking to convert the upstairs of the shop into 15 properties.
The plans sought to create two studio apartments, 10 one-bedroom flats and three two-bedroom flats.
On November 1 Huntingdonshire District Council approved the planning application, meaning the upstairs of the building will now become new units.
With the news that the planning application has been approved, the first and second floors of the old Brittains Furnishers building are now up for sale on Rightmove.
Listed at £750,000, the sale includes the 15-strong apartment development as well as space for seven retail units on the ground floor.
The building is advertised as sitting on a "prominent corner position" in the town of St Neots.
The description also states that the ground floor of the building has been split into six retail units with "premium shop fronts", as well as a large rear commercial unit.
Brittains Furnishers Ltd became a fixture on St Neots High Street in 1924, when founder Frank Brittain opened the shop up on the street.
Before that, the Brittain family had operated out of their first shop in Eaton Ford for 20 years.
Speaking at the time of the closure, Nigel Brittain said that the decision to close the store was filled with "deep regret and sadness". He added that it had become "difficult" to compete against the internet.
