Tales of service and sacrifice from real-life heroes had a profound impact on residents of a Brampton care home as they marked Remembrance Week.

Montague House Care Home, in Keeling Lane, hosted RAF Sergeant Rob Toy and former RAF tactician Glenn Macey for the event, where residents created a ‘Wall of Honour’ using photos and stories featuring their own loved ones in the military.

Sergeant Toy met with residents at the home – built on the former RAF Brampton base - to talk about his 22-year career in the RAF, which has involved active service in Afghanistan and Iraq.

His tales captivated residents, including Freddie Horsnell, aged 95, who lit up when given the chance to quiz Sergeant Toy and engage in friendly rivalry about whether the RAF or The Army – in which he served – is better.

Later, Glenn Macey gave a fascinating talk about maritime aviation and his time as a Nimrod pilot.

Home manager Paula Yorkston-Toy said the event, where the visitors helped residents assemble a huge poppy display at the entrance of Montague House, was uplifting and emotional.

Paula, a Princess Mary’s Royal Airforce Nursing Service veteran, said: “We wanted to mark Remembrance Week with something special this year, and our visitors helped us do just that.

“Here at Montague House, we are very proud of our veterans and those serving their country today, so it’s great to recognise this with a series of events this week.”
