A service took place at the War Memorial in Godmanchester on Sunday to remember the town's fallen.
Mayor Cllr Alan Hooker, deputy mayor Cllr Debbie Mickelburgh and others took part in a procession and service and a group of Year 6 pupils from three primary schools in Godmanchester read a poem.
The average age of the 77 Godmanchester soldiers who died in battle was 22.5 years, the youngest being bugler Philip Bullen who lied to enlist and was 15 when he died, the eldest being RAF Private, 1st Class James Forster who was 49 when he died.
Not all men died in Belgium and France; William Chandler died in Madras in India, William Childs in Greece, Athur William Parker in Italy and Frederick John Chamberlian in Iraq.
Two men, James Green and Alfred Arnold, were taken as prisoners-of-war and both died in Germany.
Many well known Godmanchester families lost multiple sons/brother/cousins – Brown (2) Chandler (3), Forster (5), Gibbins (2), Green (5) and Wells (2).
