A lost pup in Huntingdonshire has been rescued and taken in by an animal charity after an entire community rallied together to find her.

Peanut, as she has become affectionately known, was spotted running around Abbotsley on her own.

Her sighting sparked concern in the local community, with people rushing to social media to share information, organise search groups and share advice on how to rescue Peanut.

St Neots Animal Search and Rescue were alerted to the missing dog on social media, and dispatched a team of volunteers to set up feeding stations and thermal cameras to try and locate her.

However, the Cain family from Abbotsley, who had been tracking Peanut's movements, played a crucial role in the bid to save Peanut.

Now dubbed the "village dog whisperers", the Cain family coaxed the frightened dog to safety.

"At first she was terrified, her little body trembling with fear, but with patience and a gentle approach, I slowly gained her trust.

"Watching her go from being scared and unsure to finally feeling safe enough to come to me was incredibly moving. It’s a moment I’ll never forget."

After the rescue, Peanut was taken to Woodgreen, in Godmanchester, where she received immediate care.

Pauline Norman, a spokesperson for St Neots Animal Search and Rescue said: "We are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from the community.

"This remarkable effort has not only saved Peanut but shown the strength and compassion of our town and villages.

"We are now hoping she finds a loving family who will give her the forever home she deserves."
