A flood-prone road in Huntingdonshire has reopened after flooding forced it to shut for the third time this year.

Little Paxton Bridge, on the B1041 Mill Lane, between St Neots and Little Paxton, shut at 1am on November 28 amid increased water levels across the district.

Multiple flood warnings were issued by the Environment Agency in response to rainfall after Storm Bert hit the UK last week.

The bridge's closure came less than two months after it was repaired and reopened after previous flooding caused severe damage to the road's surface.

The cobbles on the bridge were removed and a new road surface was laid on the existing concrete beneath it to ensure that the repair lasted longer.

It was revealed on Friday, (November 29) that previous repairs to the road had been damaged, with small sections of tarmac lifted by flood water.

Cllr Alex Beckett, chair of the Highways and Transport Committee at Cambridgeshire County Council described the most recent closure as "frustrating".

He said: "It’s incredibly frustrating that the flooding at this location is happening more and more and so soon after our recent repairs in October.

"We know this area is prone to regular flooding, which is why recent repairs prioritised flood resilience. We removed the old road surface and laid a new deeper surface on the concrete beneath. We also installed a new kerb line."

Cllr Beckett said an urgent meeting with the Environment Agency had been called to discuss how flood management can be improved at the bridge.

Only one flood alert remains in force in Huntingdonshire, with areas around the River Great Ouse from Brampton to Earith at risk of flooding.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said areas most at risk include:

  • Back Brook

  • Hall Green Brook

  • Parsons Drove Drain

  • Swavesey Drain

  • Wadsbys Folly

  • Access to properties in Berry Lane, Godmanchester

In February, a petition to improve the Little Paxton and Mill Lane bridges and road surfaces hit more than 2,800 signatures.

The petition, submitted to Cambridgeshire County Council, addressed the ongoing chaos caused in Little Paxton (and as a result, surrounding villages and towns) when the River Great Ouse floods.
