First team match report on Saturday, February 17: United Counties League Premier Division South game featuring Histon and Eynesbury Rovers.
Eynesbury Rovers suffered their sixth consecutive league defeat as they look worryingly over their shoulder at the two clubs below them in the table, Desborough Town and Leicester Nirvana.
Those clubs also met on Saturday and much to Rovers relief shared four goals. However, both clubs have games in hand over Eynesbury who have yet to host them in league fixtures which will be crucial.
Rovers fielded new signings Daniel Hammer, and Declan Rogers, who returns to the club after making two appearances as a teenager in the 2004/05 season and 29 appearances, scoring 10 goals, in the 2017/18 season.
The first chance of the game fell to Rovers in the second minute but Rogers’ free kick from 28 yards came off the defensive wall.
The hosts’ first attempt came from Dan Gould as he fired inches over the bar. Reece Lewis in the Rovers’ goal kept the visitors in the match as he saved with his feet to deny Gould.
At the other end an Owen Dixon cross was narrowly missed by the head of Adrian O’Hara but in the 33rd-minute, Histon went ahead.
Max York’s throw in from the right was played on by Connor Barnes for Gould to prod home from close range. Gould could have scored just two minutes later but Lewis bravely gathered the ball at the strikers’ feet.
For Rovers Rogers sent a long ball out of defence for Pharrell Anderson to run onto but his shot from outside the box came off a defender and behind for a corner kick.
Early in the second half O’Hara’s sweeping shot was somehow kept out by Sam Roach in the Histon goal.
Once again Lewis kept the score down when he denied Matt Hayden, again saving with his feet, before Bubba Kamara missed a sitter at the back post, diverting the ball wide from six yards with an open goal in sight.
Eynesbury’s best spell came in the final 10 minutes as they pushed for an equaliser. O’Hara’s shot from the edge of the box clipped a defender and went behind for a corner.
From that flag kick, the ball was only cleared to Marcel Rzeszutek, his shot was blocked by a defender but fell to Rogers, whose shot was tipped over the bar by Roach.
Five minutes into stoppage time Reece Lewis came up for a corner. The ball was delivered by Rogers and Roach’s attempted punch clear came off the head of Lewis and behind for a goal kick.
Next up for Rovers is a home league fixture against Rugby Borough on Saturday, February 24, kick off is at 3pm.
