The Hunts Post Club of the Week this week is the Huntingdon Radio Yacht Club (HRYC).
Tell us about your club
Radio sailing or yachting is very much the same as big boat sailing, we follow the same rules as they do we’re just the smaller version.
HRYC currently has 38 members, some who just sail for pleasure and others who like to race.
We regularly get 10-15 members racing every Saturday morning with eight to 10 turning up for the Monday evening series through the summer months.
It’s not just the sailing; we do have regular social events.
The Model Yachting Association (MYA) is the representative body for radio sailing in the UK that looks after the higher admin needs of radio sailing.
"The MYA has 100+ clubs nationally with more than 2,000 active members, and we are part of the Eastern District (ED).
What is the age range of members at the club?
Radio sailing is open to all ages, our youngest member is 11 and we have members who are in their 80s, we are an all-inclusive activity.
How long has the club been running?
HRYC has been in existence for more than 12 years.
Where are you based and where do you meet and how much does it cost?
HRYC is based at Hunts Sailing Club (HSC) sailing on the lake beside the St Ives bypass.
The current annual membership fee is £76; part of which does go to the host club HSC as we have full use of their facilities, it also gets us invites to their functions during the year.
Do you use any special equipment? Do you fundraise for it?
Members have their own boats and the club does have its own recovery craft for when you ‘lose contact’ with your yacht.
Whilst some of our running costs are covered by the membership fee we do hold open events inviting members from other local clubs to come and race with us.
This is our main fundraising activity which can see 20-30 boats on the water.
Is there outdoor and indoor training?
The club puts on training sessions during the year; this is usually an indoor session of theory followed by putting it into practice on the water.
Our Wednesday session is a more relaxed form of continuous training that we run throughout the year.
New and returning members can also benefit from our mentoring sessions.
