Owen Edwards reports on the weekend games played by St Neots Hockey Club.
St Neots Hockey Club’s mixed team picked up the win of the weekend as they beat Cambridge City 6-1 in their first round tie of the England Hockey Mixed Championships.
In what was a perfect send off, outgoing vice chairman Mike Hornby scored four goals in his final game for the club.
Women’s 1’s forward Kira Herbert scored the other two for Saints.
The Men’s 1s earned their first win since the opening weekend, beating Wisbech Town 2s 2-1.
After failing to win in six games, it looked like it would be another tough one for Saints as the visitors took the lead early on.
Saints started to create opportunities and were back level when Owen Edwards was quick to react to a loose ball in front of goal.
Despite having the chances, the hosts couldn’t convert any a the game entered nervy conclusion.
With only a couple of minutes to go, Nick Hipwell drove down the right side to the byline and his cut back was deflected in by a Wisbech defender.
Saints will now hope for the win gives them a much needed boost going in to the final two games before the Christmas break.
There were no other goals on the men’s side of the club as the unbeaten Men’s 2s drew 0-0 with Newmarket 2s as did league leading Men’s 3s with St Ives 4s.
The Men’s 4s couldn’t build on their first win of the season as they fell to a 3-0 defeat to City of Peterborough 7s.
The Women’s 1s are without a win in four as they lost 4–1 to joint league leaders Dereham 1s.
The Women’s 2s lost for the first time this season as they were beaten 5-1 away to Huntingdon and Northstowe 1s.
Saints took an early lead as Vanessa Wilson scored her sixth goal of the season.
The hosts equalised quickly after but neither side could find the back of the goal before the break.
In the second half, Hunts took control and scored four to complete the heavy defeat for Saints.
The Women’s 3s scored more goals than the rest of the club combined as they thrashed City of Peterborough 5s 5-0.
Vanessa Wilson bagged a hat-trick, while Esther Cove and Ali McMurray each claimed one.
The Women’s 4s couldn’t continue their excellent run of form as they lost 1-0 to Kettering 3.
